Sarawak Reinforces Preparedness Against Zoonotic & Tropical Diseases

SIBU: The biennial Conference on Zoonotic and Tropical Diseases has been described as a vital initiative to boost preparedness in dealing with the spread of infectious diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Prof Dr. Sim Kui Hian, emphasised that zoonotic diseases—those originating from animals—such as HIV and COVID-19, have shown how serious the risk of transmission can be and should not be taken lightly. “In Sarawak, we’ve seen the impact of monkey malaria transmitted through mosquitoes, which proves that such threats are very real. That’s why we established the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC), costing over RM200 million. It is the first of its kind in Malaysia and was built as part of our readiness for any eventuality,” he said. He made these remarks when officiating the 2nd Asia-Pacific Conference on Zoonotic and Neglected Tropical Diseases 2025, held here on Thursday. Dr. Sim added that climate change has increased the risk of tropical diseases spreading to other countries, making international cooperation and knowledge-sharing all the more important. Sarawak is currently collaborating with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta to gain expert support, enabling local personnel to be trained and laboratories to function more efficiently. Commenting on the ongoing threat of rabies, Dr. Sim stressed that pet owners must take greater responsibility in ensuring their animals are properly vaccinated. “Vaccination rates for dogs in border areas have reached 80 per cent, but in urban areas, many still take it for granted. Rabies can be eliminated if everyone plays their part,” he said. -UKASnews

Kapit Waterfront Project Boosts Rural Development, Celebrates Local Cultural Identity

KAPIT: The completion of the Kapit Waterfront Project marks another significant milestone in Sarawak’s efforts to improve rural infrastructure, bringing progress to the interior while celebrating and preserving the region’s unique cultural heritage. Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi expressed his appreciation to the Public Works Department (JKR) Kapit Division, contractors, consultants, implementing agencies, and the local community for their strong collaboration in successfully delivering the project despite numerous challenges such as its riverside location, unpredictable weather, and fluctuating water levels. “This project stands as a testament to the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to providing modern, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure not just in urban areas but also in rural towns like Kapit,” he said during the official event on Thursday. The Kapit Waterfront Project, which is an extension of Phase 1, includes upgrades to the jetty area, the construction of an esplanade, walkways, longboat berthing areas, and riverbank protection works to mitigate erosion risks. Dato Sri Alexander, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kapit, highlighted several key features of the site, including its wide and comfortable pedestrian paths, landscaped rest areas, architectural elements reflecting Kapit’s cultural identity, modern lighting, and dedicated spaces for water sports and photography. “This waterfront is not just about beautifying the townscape—it also serves as an open public space that supports social, economic, and recreational activities, thereby contributing directly to the improved quality of life for the local community,” he said. He emphasised that the project has the potential to stimulate the local economy by creating more opportunities for hawkers and small traders, while also fostering community spirit through healthy recreational events held at the site. A key symbol at the site is the monument to the legendary warrior 'Bujang Berani', erected along the riverbank as a tribute to the bravery and heritage of the local people—an enduring reminder of the strength and pride of Kapit’s residents. Also present were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Deputy Minister of Digital and Member of Parliament for Hulu Rajang, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Pelagus Assemblyman, Wilson Nyabong Ijang, Baleh Assemblyman, Nicholas Kudi Jantai, Kapit Division Resident, Elvis Didit and Kapit District Council Chairman, Andy Lawrence. -UKASnews

Kapit Entrepreneurs Urged To Venture Beyond Local Markets

KAPIT: Rural entrepreneurs in Kapit have been urged to step out of their comfort zones and explore wider markets, including at the national and international levels. Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said local products from Kapit have proven to be of high quality and hold great potential—provided they are supported with the right platforms and promotional opportunities. “We don’t want our entrepreneurs to remain champions only in their own backyard. Kapit’s products have demonstrated quality and strong potential for growth. “With proper guidance, confidence, and the right digital marketing strategies, they can break into larger markets,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Kapit Entrepreneurs Carnival 2025 on Thursday. The 10-day carnival recorded an encouraging total sales figure of RM178,104.30, involving 26 local entrepreneurs. The event provided a vital platform to showcase products, gather customer feedback, and build new business networks. Dato Sri Alexander also emphasised the importance of using social media and digital platforms such as TikTok and e-commerce to expand market reach. He said the world is rapidly embracing digital transformation, and rural entrepreneurs must keep pace with these changes to remain competitive and sustainable. “The improved road connectivity between Kapit and Sibu is now opening up more opportunities for entrepreneurs from the interior to widen their distribution networks and cut down on logistics costs,” he added. The Kapit MP is confident that synergy between the government, private sector, and community will be the key to building a more competitive and resilient rural entrepreneurship ecosystem. “Our entrepreneurs are just as capable as any others, and it’s time they take bold steps—going beyond Kapit to the rest of Malaysia, and eventually, the world,” he said. Also present were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Deputy Minister of Digital and Member of Parliament for Hulu Rajang, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Pelagus Assemblyman, Wilson Nyabong Ijang, Baleh Assemblyman, Nicholas Kudi Jantai, Kapit Division Resident, Elvis Didit and Kapit District Council Chairman, Andy Lawrence. -UKASnews

GPS Prioritises Welfare, Infrastructure Over Political Rhetoric

KUCHING: Kota Sentosa Assemblyman, Wilfred Yap has dismissed recent claims made by Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak Chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, who alleged that the state is ‘flush with cash but failing its poor’. Wilfred labelled the claims as misleading and a deliberate attempt to downplay the Sarawak Government’s efforts in delivering inclusive development and social support. He said the state’s revenues are being reinvested into initiatives that provide real and tangible benefits to the people. He pointed to the Sarawak Government’s comprehensive approach to social welfare, which he said supports people from the day they are born right through to their senior years. “For newborns and mothers, there’s the RM1,000 Endowment Fund and RM450 Postnatal Assistance. Registered childcare centres receive RM5,000 yearly to ease the burden of early childhood care. “Students benefit from school uniform vouchers, free transport, as well as tuition subsidies, and beginning 2026, university education will be made free without any bond requirement. “Meanwhile, seniors receive health benefits, discounts under the Kenyalang Gold Card, and RM3,000 funeral assistance. For low-income families, there are food vouchers worth RM250 to RM800, targeted medical aid, and microcredit to support small business ventures,” he said. Wilfred emphasised that these are clear examples of meaningful spending on people, rather than what he described as empty slogans and media grandstanding. He said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government prioritises practical, long-term support for families and communities. On rural development, Wilfred stressed that Sarawak’s commitment is unmatched, with more than 60 per cent of the state’s development budget channelled into rural transformation projects. These include roads, water supply, electricity, and healthcare facilities for areas that were previously overlooked. “Unlike when DAP was in federal power from 2018 to 2020, GPS has delivered what others failed to,” he said. He pointed to several major infrastructure projects abandoned by the Pakatan Harapan federal administration, of which DAP was part, such as the Batang Lupar, Batang Igan, Batang Rambungan, and Batang Kemena bridges. “These are not mere cosmetic ventures. They are economic lifelines that DAP chose to walk away from, only to now act as if it never happened,” he said. Wilfred also highlighted the state’s forward-looking investments aimed at building a self-reliant Sarawak. These include the new international airport and deepsea port, the coastal highway, the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system in Kuching, renewable energy projects, and the formation of Air Borneo to improve regional connectivity. “These are not just projects, they represent a vision,” he said. Responding to DAP’s criticism of the RM30 million flagpole in Kuching, Wilfred clarified that it was not paid for with public funds. Instead, he said it was part of a broader development project financed through corporate social responsibility contributions from PETRONAS, PETROS, and SHELL. “It’s irresponsible to deliberately mislead the public on this,” he added. He further noted that while social welfare in Malaysia typically falls under federal jurisdiction, the Sarawak Government has gone above and beyond by contributing state funds to top up and extend support. Wilfred ended by contrasting GPS’s approach with what he termed the opposition’s ‘noisy politics’. “We don’t just say Sarawak First. We make it happen,” he said. -UKASnews
