KAPIT: The completion of the Kapit Waterfront Project marks another significant milestone in Sarawak’s efforts to improve rural infrastructure, bringing progress to the interior while celebrating and preserving the region’s unique cultural heritage.

Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi expressed his appreciation to the Public Works Department (JKR) Kapit Division, contractors, consultants, implementing agencies, and the local community for their strong collaboration in successfully delivering the project despite numerous challenges such as its riverside location, unpredictable weather, and fluctuating water levels.

“This project stands as a testament to the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to providing modern, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure not just in urban areas but also in rural towns like Kapit,” he said during the official event on Thursday.

The Kapit Waterfront Project, which is an extension of Phase 1, includes upgrades to the jetty area, the construction of an esplanade, walkways, longboat berthing areas, and riverbank protection works to mitigate erosion risks.

Dato Sri Alexander, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kapit, highlighted several key features of the site, including its wide and comfortable pedestrian paths, landscaped rest areas, architectural elements reflecting Kapit’s cultural identity, modern lighting, and dedicated spaces for water sports and photography.

“This waterfront is not just about beautifying the townscape—it also serves as an open public space that supports social, economic, and recreational activities, thereby contributing directly to the improved quality of life for the local community,” he said.

He emphasised that the project has the potential to stimulate the local economy by creating more opportunities for hawkers and small traders, while also fostering community spirit through healthy recreational events held at the site.

A key symbol at the site is the monument to the legendary warrior 'Bujang Berani', erected along the riverbank as a tribute to the bravery and heritage of the local people—an enduring reminder of the strength and pride of Kapit’s residents.

Also present were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Deputy Minister of Digital and Member of Parliament for Hulu Rajang, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Pelagus Assemblyman, Wilson Nyabong Ijang, Baleh Assemblyman, Nicholas Kudi Jantai, Kapit Division Resident, Elvis Didit and Kapit District Council Chairman, Andy Lawrence. -UKASnews
