Translation As Strategic Driver Of Knowledge & Digital Economy Development

KUCHING: Translation is not merely a tool of communication but a strategic driver in advancing knowledge, the digital economy, the creative industry, and cross-cultural diplomacy in Sarawak. Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said translation serves as a bridge connecting civilizations, expanding access to knowledge, and preserving the cultural heritage of diverse communities. He noted that in Sarawak, which is home to more than 30 ethnic groups with their own languages and dialects, translation also plays an important role in safeguarding the state's rich linguistic and cultural legacy. "I do not view translation as just a means of communication. It is, in fact, a strategic driver for Sarawak's development plans as it facilitates collaboration with foreign investors and enhances access to quality modules and training," he said. He said this in his text of speech read by Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam during the 20th International Translation Conference held here, on Tuesday. Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari further emphasised that investments in translation, professional training for translators, and linguistic technologies form part of the intellectual infrastructure that underpins Sarawak's national and international aspirations. He also linked the importance of translation to the growth of the regional aviation sector including the upcoming AirBorneo service that will gradually connect Sarawak with Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Hong Kong. “High-quality translation will be key to encourage cultural diplomacy among passengers from diverse linguistic backgrounds,” he said. At the same time, the Sarawak Premier extended his appreciation to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), particularly the Faculty of Education, Language and Communication, for hosting the event alongside co-organisers, the Malaysian Translators Association (PPM), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), and the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM). "This conference is a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, ideas, and innovation in the field of translation. “I hope it will produce more professional translators, particularly from Sarawak, who will thrive on the global stage," he said. The biennial conference brings together scholars, professional translators, researchers, and language enthusiasts from across the globe to discuss the role of translation in an increasingly borderless world. -UKASnews
