UNESCO Field Evaluation Mission To Visit Sarawak Delta Aspiring Geopark

KUCHING: The Sarawak Delta Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark (SDaUGGp) said that the UNESCO Field Evaluation Mission is scheduled to take place from 23 to 26 June 2025. This upcoming visit marks the final and most critical step in Sarawak’s journey towards securing recognition as the state’s first UNESCO Global Geopark. The mission will be carried out by two highly regarded UNESCO evaluators, Jean-Simon Pagès from France and Antonio Garcia Jiménez from Spain. According to a statement on Tuesday, Both evaluators bring with them extensive experience in geopark assessment and management, and their findings will be instrumental in determining whether the Sarawak Delta Geopark meets the strict international standards required for official UNESCO designation. During the four-day evaluation, the experts will tour various significant locations across the Sarawak Delta region that collectively demonstrate its rich geological, biological, and cultural diversity. The statement added, among the key areas they will explore are the Schist Tuang Semeba and Paku Rock Maze in Bau, known for their distinctive geological features, as well as Wind Cave Nature Reserve in Bau, which highlights both geological and biological importance. The Semenggoh Nature Reserve in Padawan, home to a range of flora and fauna, will also be part of the itinerary. Cultural heritage will be prominently featured through visits to the Borneo Cultures Museum in Kuching and the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong, both of which serve as important centres for preserving and promoting local traditions. The evaluators will also make their way to Kampung Peros in Krokong, Bau, an example of a kampung geopark, and SMK Paku in Bau, a geopark school actively involved in education and awareness related to geoconservation. Additional strategic locations throughout the aspiring geopark area will also be assessed. This evaluation mission holds great significance not only for the potential UNESCO recognition but also for showcasing Sarawak’s commitment to sustainable development, geoconservation, education, and community empowerment. It is a vital opportunity to present the region’s efforts in preserving its natural and cultural heritage through inclusive and forward-thinking geopark initiatives. The Sarawak Delta Geopark covers an area of 3,112 square kilometres and is characterised by stunning landscapes, remarkable geological formations, and a rich tapestry of indigenous cultures. These communities not only rely on the natural resources of the area but also play a crucial role in preserving traditional knowledge and cultural practices that are deeply intertwined with the environment. The region’s geological history is particularly notable, with rock formations and features that date back around 250 million years, shaped by significant tectonic activity. These geological processes are part of a broader narrative that connects Southeast Asia with other parts of the world, including Europe and Asia, making many of the sites within the Sarawak Delta of international geological importance. The Sarawak Delta Geopark team has extended its sincere appreciation to all partners, stakeholders, and local communities who have contributed to the preparation of this evaluation. Their collaborative efforts reflect the collective hope that Sarawak will soon earn its place on the global geopark map. -UKASnews

Sarawak Ready To Share Energy With ASEAN Countries

KUCHING: Sarawak is ready to play a bigger role in the regional energy landscape by sharing surplus electricity supply, especially renewable energy, with neighbouring ASEAN countries. Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said Sarawak has strong natural resources to generate hydroelectric power and has the potential to contribute not only to the state, but also to Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. Presently, he explained, the Sarawak Government plans to increase energy supply to 10 gigawatts by 2030 with at least 3 gigawatts to be added in the next four years. "Currently, we are building a 1.5 gigawatt gas turbine plant, which is 1,000 megawatts in Bintulu and 500 megawatts in Miri. "I have just returned from Baleh, Kapit, where another hydro plant is being built which will generate 1.2 gigawatts. "With this project, in the next four years, we will be able to add another 3 gigawatts to the existing installed capacity of 7 gigawatts. "Sarawak is a small state with a population of over 2.8 million people, so if we have excess energy, we are ready to share it with our brothers and sisters in the ASEAN region," he said. He said this when speaking at the 43rd ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) official dinner at a leading hotel here on Monday. Touching on the issue of global climate change, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari stressed that the world must look towards finding alternatives to hydrocarbon fuels to achieve the low carbon footprint target. He said, Sarawak is trying its best to utilise existing resources and explore new technologies to produce alternative energy by using hydrogen as one of the alternative energy sources. "Currently, we are working with partners including Japan and Korea to produce hydrogen from our water resources. "This is because we have five dams, and we are confident that with the water supply (H2O) from these dams, we can separate hydrogen and oxygen molecules through the electrolysis process. "Although currently this process is expensive, we believe that technology will develop and the cost of producing hydrogen through a new membrane in the electrolysis process will become more affordable and practical as an alternative energy source," he explained. Additionally, Sarawak is also collaborating with Gentari Petronas, Japan and Siemens in an effort to explore hydrogen production technology. He further highlighted next year as a special moment for Sarawak with the launch of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) public transport system that utilises hydrogen, making it the first in the region. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof as well as senior officials from ASEAN member countries. -UKASnews

ASEAN Power Grid Drives Sustainable Regional Energy Future

KUCHING: The ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is an important foundation in driving the sustainable and resilient regional energy agenda for the future. Deputy Prime Minister, Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof said the APG is not just an infrastructure project but a vision of a region where electricity flows without barriers across shared borders with the prosperity of one country uplifting the entire region. By connecting national grids, he explained, ASEAN countries are currently building the foundation of a truly integrated ASEAN energy market. "To fully realise the APG, it requires stronger political commitment, deeper technical cooperation and smarter investment strategies. "We need to coordinate regulations, create open and transparent markets, and adopt digital innovations to make real-time regional energy trade a reality. "We need to embrace not only physical components such as cables, substations and control systems, but also software elements such as governance frameworks, data sharing and mutual trust," he said. He said this when speaking at the 43rd ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) official dinner at a leading hotel here on Monday. Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg was present to officiate the ceremony. Dato Sri Fadillah added that the APG is built on the unique strengths in diversity in the region by leveraging on complementary geography and resources to build a greener, more inclusive and more secure future. The Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation expressed confidence that the Enhanced APG Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) alongside the upcoming ASEAN Action Plan for Energy Cooperation 2026–2030 document will further strengthen ASEAN regional energy connectivity. "This development will be a major catalyst for economic growth in all ASEAN member countries," he said. -UKASnews

Saringan Awal Kanser Usus Mampu Selamatkan Nyawa

-EDISI UKAS
