KUCHING: Sarawak has been chosen to host the prestigious 15th World Congress on Design and Health (WCDH) in 2026, making it the first time the international event will be held in Borneo.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) will serve as the host institution for the conference.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, highlighted the significant role design plays in the health sector, stressing that well-designed spaces, tools, and environments are essential for supporting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

“One of the key focuses of the conference will be sharing ideas on hospital design, particularly how to create spaces that make patients feel at ease, alive, and in a healthy environment, rather than being confined to dull and sterile buildings,” he said during the press conference at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday.

“Before even entering a hospital, the stress starts to build. But with thoughtful design - incorporating elements like art and calming features - patients can feel more relaxed and comfortable. It’s all about design, ” he added.

The Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government further noted that the conference aligns with Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to advance health-oriented initiatives.

These initiatives aim to promote sustainable environments and foster economic development, in line with Kuching's recognition as an Age-Friendly City and Community (AFCC).

“Beyond being recognised as a WHO Healthy City, we’ve been working to meet international standards such as UNICEF’s child-friendly and WHO’s age-friendly certifications. Our goal is to excel on the global stage,” he said.

With the theme Shaping Future Healthy Society: Designing for Healthy Lifestyle Behaviour, Equity, and Sustainability, the event aims to promote the improvement of quality of life through health-promoting design, focusing on environments that enhance overall wellness.

The conference is expected to attract researchers, health professionals, urban planners, architects, policymakers, and other stakeholders, all coming together to discuss and explore innovative ideas for creating more livable, sustainable, and equitable spaces.

A similar event will be held in Singapore from October 29 to November 2, 2025.

Also present at the press conference were Kuching South City Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng; Chairman of Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, Dato Peter Minos; Chairman of Padawan Municipal Council, Councillor Tan Kai; Chief Executive Officer of Business Events Sarawak, Amelia Roziman; Founder of the International Academy of Design and Health, Professor Alan Dilani; Congress Chairwoman for the 2026 World Congress on Design and Health, Dr Rosalia Saimon; and other dignitaries. -UKASnews
