KUCHING: Sarawakian students pursuing their studies in higher learning institutions across Malaysia have warmly welcomed the pocket money initiative announced by the  Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

The initiative, which aims to ease the financial burden of students in 2025, will provide each student with an allowance of RM1,200, regardless of their family income.

A student from ICATS University College, Dellnish Wan Ullis, expressed her gratitude and happiness for the financial assistance, highlighting how it helps to reduce the financial pressure on students, especially those who are studying far from home and facing high living costs.

Dellnish also thanked the Sarawak government for providing free laptops, which has further lessened the burden on her parents.

"We are extremely grateful and promise to do our best to make Sarawak proud, given all the support that has been extended to us," she said.

Another student from the same institution, Elviana Orai, shared her excitement about the initiative.

For her, financial aid like this opens up more opportunities for students to pursue higher education, which might have been previously hindered by financial constraints.

"With this assistance, our motivation to study has undoubtedly increased. As for me, I will use it to cover hostel fees and daily expenses throughout my studies," explained Elviana.

A total of 60 students from higher learning institutions, including Unimas and ICATS, visited the Sarawak Legislative Assembly complex on Wednesday.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to witness the Premier of Sarawak delivering the winding-up speech on the final day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting.-UKASnews
