KUCHING: The Sarawak government has recognised the importance of the geoscience field as a crucial driver for achieving environmental sustainability and innovation goals in the state.
Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, stated that renewable energy development, natural heritage conservation, and the exploration of green economic solutions are all directly guided by geoscience research.
“The combination of science, policy, and sustainable development is vital for creating a resilient and prosperous future for both Sarawak and the global community.
“This is evident from the Bakun and Murum Hydroelectric Dams, which are among the largest hydroelectric initiatives in Southeast Asia. These projects highlight the application of geoscience in site selection, dam design, and environmental impact mitigation.
“The geo-engineering expertise involved in these initiatives is crucial for balancing energy generation with ecological preservation,” he said.
His speech was read by Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Hipni, during the 2024 Annual Convention of the International Association for Gondwana Research (IAGR) and 21st International Conference on Gondwana to Asia held here on Tuesday.
Additionally, he said, the hydrogen-based economy shows Sarawak’s ability to blend geoscience with innovation, using geological insights to optimise water resource management and sustainable energy storage.
This underscores the potential of geoscience to drive transformational change, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 on clean energy and SDG 13 on climate action.
Datuk Amar Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development II, added that the recognition of Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park as UNESCO World Heritage Sites will boost their scientific and ecological value, driving economic growth while preserving the region’s natural heritage.
Also present were the President of the International Association for Gondwana Research, Professor Yong-Peng Dong, the Association’s Secretary General, Professor M. Santosh, Curtin University Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Leunig, Chief Executive Officer of Business Events Sarawak, Amelia Roziman, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
