KUCHING: Six teams will represent Sarawak in the 12th National Dragon and Lion Dance Championship 2024 set to take place from November 22 to 24, at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Kampar, Perak.

According to President of the Sarawak Dragon Lion Dance Wushu Association, Matthew Lee King Choon, the teams will compete in four events namely the Luminous Dragon Dance, Southern Lion Traditional, Hypo Southern Lion Dance, and Northern Lion Dance.

"This is one of the strongest teams we have ever sent to the national championships, and for the first time, we have requested Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to hand over the (Sarawak) flag as a gesture of good luck.

“Hopefully, we will bring back medals for Sarawak," he said when met by reporters at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Complex on Monday.

Earlier, the Sarawak flag was officially handed over by Dato Sri Abdul Karim to the President of the Chinese Martial Arts Association (CMAA) of Kuching District, Chester Lim Hian Thoon in a brief ceremony.

Meanwhile, Matthew said each state can send two teams per event, up to a maximum of eight teams in total for the championship.

Despite being short by two teams for the Luminous Dragon Dance and Northern Lion Dance events, the Sarawak contingent is fully committed to delivering the best performance and bring medals home. -UKASnews
