Sarawak Leads By Example In Combating Global Climate Challenges

POZNAN: As the world faces pressing environmental threats, Sarawak continues to lead by example in implementing proactive strategies to combat global climate challenges.
 
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said, the state is leading the charge by embracing sustainable technologies and comprehensive green policies.
 
“As we observed, 2023 was the hottest period in human history. Under the Paris Agreement, capping temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius is vital yet challenging.
 
“After the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, focusing heavily on environmental sustainability,” he said in a news report by TVS.
 
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari spoke in a dialogue session at the Central European Hydrogen Technology Forum here, on Thursday.
 
The Sarawak Premier was sharing on the state’s perspective and its experience in energy transition, renewable energy security, decarbonisation, and environmental sustainability.
 
He also spoke of Sarawak’s extensive efforts to protect and enhance its natural landscapes.
 
Being a part of Borneo, he explained that Sarawak is also serious in carrying out the restoration efforts of rainforests.
 
“Presently, forests cover 62 per cent of our state, contributing to 52 per cent of Malaysia’s forest area,” he stated.
 
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari further highlighted Sarawak’s reforestation initiatives and the promotion of planted forests to boost the quality of the environment, aligning with global standards.
 
The commitment extends to increasing forest coverage and promoting planted forests which is integral to the state’s digital and green economy roadmap, he added.
 
Meanwhile, the discussion also covered strategic moves implemented by the state in the hydrogen sector.
 
According to the Sarawak Premier, strong and sustainable energy sources are essential for hydrogen production.
 
In this regard, the state is fortunate to have a mix of hydro, solar, and biomass sources, he said.
 
"This diversity allows us to produce affordable hydrogen, which is crucial as we embark on our roadmap to introduce hydrogen as a major power source," he added.
 
Highlighting the global significance of these efforts, he continued, climate change is a serious concern, and Sarawak is using its assets to contribute to this global issue.
 
He also hopes to inspire and collaborate with other regions, fostering practices that benefit the global community.
 
Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Ambassador of Malaysia to Poland, Dato’ Chitra Devi Ramiah, Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Abang Ahmad Abang Morni, and Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region, Marek Wozniak. -UKASnews
