KUCHING: The Sarawak government has been called on to take urgent steps to tackle the state’s pressing housing affordability issue.

Kota Sentosa Assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin highlighted growing concerns over the lack of affordable housing options for low and middle-income groups, particularly in urban areas.

“Housing affordability continues to be a grave concern to average Sarawakians,” he said.

He said this when debating the Supply (2025) Bill, 2024 during the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting on Thursday.

Furthermore, Wilfred noted that rising property prices, stagnant household income, and an imbalanced supply-demand situation are the primary factors driving the current affordability crisis.

The mismatch between housing supply and demand has priced out many middle-income earners, prompting him to urge the government to prioritise urban areas like Kota Sentosa where housing costs are high.

“I appeal to the Sarawak government for the implementation of an affordable housing scheme of at least 500 units in the constituency of Kota Sentosa,” he added. -UKASnews
