KUCHING: The Sarawak government has been urged to propose a comprehensive urban development project for the Lundu district.
According to Tanjong Datu Assemblyman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, findings from a recent lab session conducted with various stakeholders have shown that Lundu needs an urban development project to complement its potential as a tourism hub in the future.
He said the development project may be inspired by similar ones that have been implemented including the Darul Hana project.
“Lundu has seen rapid population growth and increasing congestion which led to the rise of informal settlements and out migration.
“A balanced development initative as implemented in Darul Hana can modernize and beautify our district, addressing housing challenges and improve quality of life for residents,” he said when debating the Supply (2025) Bill, 2024 during the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting on Thursday.
Furthermore, Azizul said the geological conditions around Sungai Batang Kayan and the river mouth have led to risks of soil erosion for many residents in his constituency.
This may be harmful and damaging to the safety of residents and their houses, he added.
“I have worked with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) on this matter, and based on our study results, which included a cost-benefit analysis, we conclude that relocation with compensation is the best alternative.
“This is because the cost of relocation far surpasses the expense of constructing retaining walls and protective structures.
“With sufficient involvement and conversation, I believe that my constituents would be eager to migrate if the correct conditions are fulfilled,” Azizul said. -UKASnews
