KUCHING: The exercise of freedom of speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly come with greater accountability.
Kota Sentosa Assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin highlighted the importance of being responsible for the words the Assembly members use.
“The freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.
“Saying things that are deliberately damaging under the guise of an ‘opinion’ does not make it okay,” he said.
He said this during the debate to support the motion to amend the Standing Orders of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on the second day of the Sitting on Tuesday.
The proposed amendment, aims to prevent members from making negative allegations without proper verification, ensuring that public debates are based on reliable facts.
The amendment will also prevent any member from creating negative perceptions without verifying the facts. -UKASnews
