KUCHING: The change of name from the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) to the Sarawak Legislative Assembly is appropriate because Sarawak has been recognised as a region.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said, the change is in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the previous recognition of Sarawak as a region.

"So, it is appropriate for us to refer to it as the Sarawak Legislative Assembly, not the State Legislative Assembly.

"This is in line, it coincides with MA63 because we are a region, not a state," she said when met by reporters after officiating the 10-Minute Read Together Programme at the Sarawak State Library in Petra Jaya, here, on Tuesday.

Citing the comments of Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian on Facebook recently, Datuk Sharifah Hasidah said this is the time for Sarawakians to support this small but significant change.

She added that former Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had recognised Sarawak's status as a region.

"Let’s be consistent, and it starts with us (the people of Sarawak) not referring to Sarawak as a 'state'.

"So, the (appropriate term) is the Sarawak government, not the Sarawak state government," she said. -UKASnews
