KUCHING: Eleven years after the loss of her husband, Norashikin Sarwar has single-handedly raised her family and seen her children achieve remarkable success, particularly in the engineering field.

Norashikin, a mother of four and a well-known local catering business owner in Bintulu, has exemplified perseverance and determination. Despite facing the challenges of widowhood, she nurtured her children with discipline and a strong emphasis on education. Her hard work paid off, with all four of her children now pursuing careers in engineering.

Her two eldest sons, Muhammad Hazwan Fikri, 29, and Muhammad Hamizan Fikri, 27, are technicians in the oil and gas industry, while her youngest, Muhammad Hijazi Fikri, 20, is preparing to study Electrical Engineering at Institut Kemahiran MARA (IKM) Bintulu.

The family's pride is particularly evident in Norashikin’s only daughter, Nur Shahira Jamila Roslan, 24, who recently secured a permanent position as an Executive (Operation Engineer) at Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), a subsidiary of PETRONAS. Shahira, a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering graduate from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), began her journey with MLNG during her internship through the PETRONAS Graduate Employability Enhancement Scheme (GEES).

Shahira was one of seven Sarawakians offered permanent positions with MLNG at the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2024 event in Kuala Lumpur on October 19. Seven others were offered internships under the Protege-GEES programme.

Reflecting on her children’s success, Norashikin expressed immense pride.

"I never pushed them to become engineers, it was their own ambition. Watching them achieve their goals is truly rewarding," she said.

Shahira, echoing her mother’s sentiments, credits her mother’s resilience and support for her achievements.

"The lessons my mother taught me have made me who I am today. I want to make her proud and continue to honour the sacrifices that have brought me this far," she said.

MLNG operates as part of the PETRONAS LNG Complex (PLC) in Bintulu, one of the largest liquefied natural gas production facilities globally, with a production capacity of nearly 30 million tonnes per annum. -UKASnews
