KUCHING: Sarawak is intensifying its efforts to address global challenges by fostering innovation and sustainability through research and development (R&D).

In his address at the 2nd Sarawak Research and Development Symposium on Wednesday, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg emphasised the importance of expertise and collective resources to ensure that solutions are both innovative and scalable.

This approach is exemplified by the work of the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC), which collaborates closely with academic institutions, industry partners, government bodies, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The goal is to establish a solid framework that translates research into practical solutions for the state’s development needs.

A key example of this initiative is the vaccine development programme spearheaded by the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC).

As a member of the UK-SEA Vaccine Hub, the programme facilitates technology and expertise transfer from the United Kingdom to Sarawak, strengthening local vaccine production capabilities.

"A clear example of how we are advancing is through SIDC’s vaccine programme, which is a direct outcome of our collaboration with international experts," said Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari, whose speech was delivered by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Premier also spotlighted Sarawak’s growing achievements in renewable energy innovation, particularly the region’s potential in green energy.

He noted that ongoing R&D is essential to maximise the efficiency of natural resources and accelerate sustainable development.

"Sarawak is focusing on overcoming the challenges in hydrogen production, notably cost reduction. In response, SRDC is launching a themed grant call focused on renewable energy R&D, specifically targeting hydrogen production and storage," he added. "This initiative is a clear demonstration of our commitment to harnessing local knowledge and resources for our energy future."

During the event, several significant MoUs were signed, further advancing Sarawak’s R&D ambitions. These included agreements between SIDC and the University of Sheffield and Hilleman, as well as between the Sarawak Microelectronics Design Semiconductor (SMD) and Curtin University Malaysia.

The event was attended by several key figures, including Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, and the advisor for the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), Datuk Amar Michael Manyin, alongside SRDC Deputy General Manager, Dr Ivan Yap Kok Seng and other distinguished guests.-UKASnews
