Research Data Collection Workshop Held To List Scientific Research Relating To Sarawak Delta Geopark

KUCHING: A Scientific Research Data Collection Workshop for the aspiring Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark was organised by the Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG), Sarawak here on Tuesday.


The Workshop was held in collaboration with the Sarawak Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR), Forest Department Sarawak (FDS), Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Sarawak Museum Department (SMD), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Sarawak.


According to a statement by JMG Sarawak, the purpose of this workshop is to list the scientific research in the respective fields (geology, biology and culture) that exist in the Sarawak Delta Geopark.


"At the same time, it aimed to provide a strategic platform for brainstorming sessions among professional geologists to highlight the international significance of geological heritage.


"The outcomes of this workshop will be used for the preparation of Letter of Intent and Application Dossier which will be submitted to the UNESCO by June and October 2024 respectively,” the statement stated.


The Sarawak Government is targeting for Sarawak Delta to be recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark by 2026 in line with the aspiration of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. -UKASnews
