BELAGA: The successful celebration of World Diabetes Day in Belaga District highlighted the importance of early prevention efforts.
Murum Assemblyman, Kennedy Chukpai Ugon stated that this programme aims to boost public awareness about adopting a healthy lifestyle as a preventive measure against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), especially diabetes.
He noted that this aligns with the Malaysian Ministry of Health's initiatives to curb the rise of NCDs, particularly diabetes, which has been increasing nationwide.
“Diabetes often develops unnoticed, with most individuals showing no symptoms for 7 to 10 years after its onset.
“Therefore, everyone should prioritise healthy lifestyle choices, such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and routine health screenings,” he said during the ceremony.
Kennedy urged the public, especially those with a family history of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, or a sedentary lifestyle, to undergo annual NCD risk screenings and pay attention to their mental and emotional well-being.
With the theme "Diabetes and Wellbeing," this one-day celebration featured a variety of activities, including aerobics, a health forum, exhibitions by government and private agencies, and more.
During the event, Kennedy announced an allocation of RM15,000 for the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Uma Daro and RM10,000 for the Sg. Asap Health Clinic Health Panel.
He also presented a RM5,000 cash donation to the Uma Daro Women’s Bureau.
Also present were Public Health Specialist of Bintulu Health Office, Dr Yassimear Ugak, Administrative Officer of Sg. Asap's Sub-District Office, Adilla Talu, Chair of the Malaysian Diabetes Association of Bintulu Branch, Dr Rawa Bau, Family Medicine Specialist of Belaga District, Dr Allen Chai, Chairperson of the Advisory Panel of Sg.
