Sarawak Deputy Premier Attends Deepavali Celebrations, Highlights Unity In Diversity

KUCHING: Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, and his wife, Dato Doreen Mayang, were special guests at a lively Deepavali luncheon hosted by Dato Shankar Ram, President of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Association Kuching, followed by a Diwali open house hosted by Datuk Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira, President of the Sarawak Sikh Temple Association.

Speaking during the celebrations, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah emphasised the significance of Sarawak’s cultural and religious diversity, highlighting how the celebration of festivals like Deepavali plays a vital role in the state’s rich heritage.

"Celebrating various festivals, including Deepavali, is a cornerstone of Sarawak's cultural fabric," he remarked.

"It is essential that we continue to uphold the unity and diversity that define our community. The tradition of open houses and visiting one another during the festive season provides a wonderful opportunity to strengthen friendships and foster stronger community ties,” he added.

He further underlined that such gatherings are crucial in promoting understanding and inclusivity among Sarawak’s diverse population, enhancing the bonds between people of different religions, races, and cultures.
