Tan Sri Peter Chin Makes History As First Chinese Pro-Chancellor Of UPM

BINTULU: Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui has etched his name in history as the first Chinese individual from Sarawak to be appointed as Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

He received his appointment letter from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on August 20, 2024, during a ceremony at Istana Bukit Kayangan, Shah Alam.

Tan Sri Peter's term as Pro-Chancellor will run for three years, from October 18, 2024 to October 17, 2027.

Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, the Secretary-General of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, praised the appointment during a press conference on Wednesday.

He emphasised that this significant recognition reflects Tan Sri Peter Chin’s extensive contributions and dedicated service to the nation’s development.

“This historic appointment is indeed a source of pride for Sarawak and SUPP,” he stated.

Since 2014, Tan Sri Peter has played a vital role in advancing Malaysia’s agricultural and food security as the Non-Independent Non-Executive Chairman of the IOI Group.

His arrival in Bintulu coincides with UPM’s 48th Convocation Ceremony, scheduled for November 2 and 3, 2024, at Dewan Sri Kenyalang, UPM Bintulu Campus.

Among those present at the press conference were Tanjong Batu Assemblyman, Johnny Pang Leong Ming, Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Angellie Stephen Raja, and other dignitaries.-UKASnews
