KUCHING: The Sarawak Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD) is approaching the final draft for amendment of the Sarawak Fisheries Ordinance, aimed at benefiting local fishermen and enhancing the state's revenue from the fisheries sector.
According to M-FICORD Minister, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Sarawak's extensive 1,000 km coastline is home to numerous untapped resources.
Hence, with the proposed amendment to this ordinance, Sarawak plans to establish its own fisheries department to facilitate more efficient and authoritative management of these resources.
“We currently rely on agencies like the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), but without proper regulation, the future of our fishermen remains uncertain.
“Larger vessels sometimes encroach into shallow waters, adversely affecting the income of smaller fishing boats. To address this issue, we are adopting a new approach, akin to the establishment of the veterinary department, which initially operated under the agriculture department,” he explained to reporters after officiating the Integrity Day Ceremony for the Sarawak Department of Veterinary Services 2024 at a prominent hotel on Thursday.
He expressed optimism that the ministry could establish this department within the next year or two.
In addition, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi underscored the importance of food safety and security, noting concerns stemming from unregulated imports and individuals lacking integrity.
“We need Sarawak’s own quarantine system, particularly as some unscrupulous individuals import vegetables with excessive pesticide use.
“By the time these products are tested in the laboratory, they are already in circulation. This is where a quarantine authority becomes crucial,” he added.
Also present at the ceremony were the Advisor in the Office of the Premier of Sarawak (Food Industries, Commodities, and Regional Development), Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, the Director of the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak, Datu Dr Adrian Susin Ambud, Deputy Permanent Secretary of M-FICORD, Sayed Ismail Nasiruddin Dato Sri Wan Hashim, Deputy Director of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM), Wan Ahmad Nidzam Wan Omar, and other distinguished guests.-UKASnews
