BINTULU: The environmentally sustainable ferroalloy production industry can create new opportunities for Sarawak.

The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said, the supply chain for the ferroalloy production industry can be developed in Sarawak to create export opportunities.

According to him, OM Sarawak has the technology to produce environmentally sustainable ferroalloys by reducing sulfur and oxide emissions in the production process.

"I understand that ferroalloy has a lot of waste in the production process that can be further processed to produce other products.

"With that technology, calcium silicon cored wire can also produce durable screws that can be used in building ships and airplanes," he explained.

He said this while speaking at the 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner of OM Sarawak at a hotel here on Tuesday.

The Premier of Sarawak suggested that OM Sarawak establish a factory to produce calcium wire in order to apply the concept of 'circular economy'.

He added that the Sarawak Government is trying to develop a feeder road to connect the rural areas to the main road, thus requiring raw materials from the side production of ferroalloy.

"This means OM Sarawak must have a roadmap using ferroalloy as a base and then develop a downstream chain for other products that will be sustainable and maybe one day we can export ferroalloy byproducts abroad," he said.

Also present were Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak Dato Rajang Menggi, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Chairman of Sarawak Energy Dato Ibrahim Baki, Resident of Bintulu Division Datu Nyurak Keti, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OM Holdings Low Ngee Tong and other honored guests. - UKASnews
