KUCHING: The Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) line will be extended to Batu Kawa with the addition of a yellow line which aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the area.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said this initiative will not only ease rush-hour traffic but also improve connectivity through public transportation.
“We currently have the blue and red ART lines, and the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian has suggested extending the ART to Batu Kawa with the yellow line.
“I believe this will not be an issue, as further discussions can be held. What’s important is that we establish a new public transportation route,” he said.
He spoke to officiate the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multipurpose Hall in Batu Kawa on Monday.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that the ART project is part of the Kuching Division development plan, which includes Batu Kawa, Bau, and Matang.
“These are three key areas that will be prioritised, especially for urban development, or more commonly known as urban redevelopment,” he added.
Earlier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim who is also the Batu Kawa Assemblyman explained that Batu Kawa is an ideal location for ART services due to its growing population.
“The ART is expected to become a popular choice, especially with the proposed yellow line by Sarawak Metro, which will connect to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH),” he said.
