KUCHING: Sarawak Deputy Premier and Batu Kawah Assemblyman, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, has announced that three major drainage system upgrades in Desa Wira Sinar Budi Baru, Batu Kawa, are progressing ahead of schedule.

These upgrades, aimed at replacing the old earth drains established over 40 years ago, are critical in addressing the area's flood risks.

The projects, with a combined budget exceeding RM11.18 million, involve upgrading drainage systems across Lorong Desa Wira 17B1, 17B2, 17B3, 17B4, and 17A6, totalling 3,843.6 meters. Completion is expected by February 2025.

The Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage reported faster-than-anticipated progress, with some projects surpassing their completion targets.

Datuk Amar Dr Sim stressed the importance of maintaining quality standards, as the improvements will significantly benefit the community.

Additionally, a RM20 million retention pond will be constructed as part of a broader flood mitigation strategy for Desa Wira.

He said this, along with ongoing retention pond projects at MJC and Pines Square costing over RM40 million, forms part of the Sarawak Government’s 'Projek Rakyat' initiative to reduce flood risks in Batu Kawa.

Datuk Amar Dr Sim reaffirmed the Sarawak Government’s commitment to long-term infrastructure improvements and effective flood management strategies to ensure the well-being of local residents.-UKASnews
