KUCHING: The 3R Smart Community Station was launched today as part of ongoing environmental conservation efforts to encourage local participation in reducing waste by promoting the principles of reuse, reduction, and recycling (3R).

During the official launch of the programme, Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication and Minister Responsible for Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the initiative is designed to help residents manage waste disposal efficiently.

“This is a unique programme because a designated recycling station is provided for the community, where people can dispose of paper, plastic, aluminium tins, and other recyclables using the DBKU 3R app.

“With these facilities, we aim to maintain a clean environment, particularly in the Kuching North area,” he said.

He said this when being met by reporters after the official launch of the 3R Smart Community Station at Kompleks Sukan Satok.

The 3R station, equipped with solar-powered lights, rainwater harvesting systems, weighing scales, and recycling bins, is strategically placed across 14 locations in Kuching North, including schools and residential areas such as SK Muara Tebas, Sepakat Jaya Demak Laut, Surau Darul Hijrah, SMK Tunaz, SK Rakyat Tupong, Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Tunku, and SMK Sungai Maong.

DBKU Mayor, Hilmy Othman revealed plans to extend the initiative to industrial areas.

“We look forward to involving industries, particularly in Demak Laut and Sejingkat, to manage waste more effectively,” he said.

This move is expected to promote systematic waste management practices in Kuching’s industrial zones as part of DBKU’s broader effort to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment in the Kuching North region through the 3R Smart Community programme. -UKASnews
