KOTA KINABALU : Sarawak continues to assert its pivotal role in enhancing regional connectivity, sustainability, and economic growth within the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) framework.
During the 6th Chief Ministers, Governors, and Local Government Forum (CMLGF) held alongside the 27th BIMP-EAGA Ministerial Meeting 2024 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, underscored Sarawak’s significant contributions to the region.
Datuk Amar Awang Tengah highlighted several key initiatives, including Sarawak's advancements in infrastructure and transport connectivity, where projects like the Pan Borneo Highway and the planned Trans-Borneo Railway are set to strengthen regional ties.
He also emphasised Sarawak's position as a regional leader in renewable energy, with the state's commitment to expanding its energy capacity through clean energy projects like green hydrogen and hydropower.
With current electricity generation at 5.75 GW, of which 70% comes from renewable energy, Sarawak aims to expand its capacity to 15 GW, further solidifying its position as a regional energy leader.
Additionally, Sarawak is investing in high-speed internet, 5G networks and the Trans Nusantara Regional Fibre Optic Network, connecting Sarawak with Indonesia, which are expected to boost regional digital connectivity.
Hence, Sarawak’s progress in digital economy development through the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030, aligned with the ASEAN Smart Cities Network and ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Strategy.
By promoting growth through innovation and digital solutions, the state aims to drive its digital economy forward, while also supporting initiatives in sustainability and fostering cooperation across BIMP-EAGA member regions.-UKASnews
