KUCHING: Sarawak Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has been officially appointed as the fourth Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
This appointment is set to continue the legacy of outstanding leadership established by its former Chancellor, the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
As a distinguished figure with visionary leadership and vast experience in management and governance, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi is expected to further strengthen UNIMAS’ vision and mission as a community-focused and sustainable university in line with its motto, ‘Universiti Komuniti Lestari’ (Sustainable University Community).
“With great humility, I accept this significant responsibility. I recognise that the role of Chancellor is not just an honour but carries great responsibility.
“This position is not merely symbolic but plays an essential role in driving UNIMAS’ aspirations to continue achieving excellence in the fields of academic and research, both nationally and internationally.
“I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Ministry of Higher Education for this appointment. God willing, I will take this opportunity to serve and contribute to the advancement of Sarawak and our beloved nation, Malaysia,” he said.
Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi made these remarks after receiving his letter of appointment from the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir in a ceremony held at the Astana Negeri Sarawak on Wednesday.
Also present were wife of the Sarawak Governor, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Sarawak Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, Sarawak Federal Secretary, Dato Ahmad Nadzri Mohd Hassan, and Chairman of the UNIMAS Board of Directors, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie.
Earlier in his speech, Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry described Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi as an exceptional figure who continuously seeks knowledge and has a remarkable global perspective.
He noted that the Sarawak Governor’s career spans politics, policing, and law, in addition to being a prolific writer.
“As the saying goes, ‘A tree stands strong because of its roots, and strong roots are nourished by the earth’. This reflects my hope for UNIMAS’ strength to be reinforced under the leadership of Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi, and for stronger collaboration between UNIMAS and both the Sarawak and federal governments.
“Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi is seen as the guiding leader who will assist and steer UNIMAS in its future plans,” he added.
Meanwhile, UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit also praised Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi, acknowledging his dedication throughout his roles as a police officer, lawyer, Member of Parliament, politician, and as the President of the Senate.
He further noted that the Sarawak Governor’s leadership is internationally recognised, including his contribution to the formation of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Caucus, where he served as its first Chairman.
“Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi is the only Member of Parliament in ASEAN to have been appointed as the Chairman of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Caucus twice, in 2007 and again in 2018.
“His involvement in the Scouts movement also reflects his leadership abilities and underscores his efficiency, authority, and vision in governance and organisational planning,” he said.
With this appointment, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi is officially empowered to preside over convocation ceremonies, confer degrees, and perform any other duties as provided for by the Universities and University Colleges Act. -UKASnews
