Project Handover For Sarawak Performing Arts Centre By May 2

KUCHING: The handover of the project to renovate the old Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building to become the Sarawak Performing Arts Centre will be held on May 2. 

Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said, the project is expected to take approximately two and a half years to complete.

"The Sarawak Performing Arts Centre project in the old DUN building will be handed over to a contractor capable of renovating the place at the beginning of May, which is on May 2, and it is expected to take two and a half years to complete," he explained.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri programme organised by the Sarawak Arts Council here, on Saturday.

According to him, Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg will attend and personally witness the handover of the project to the contractor.

Dato Sri Abdul Karim who is also the Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said that the state government will fully cover the funds for the implementation of the project which cost more than RM100 million.

"The cost for the renovation of the DUN building and the Lapau building next to it will involve a cost of more than RM100 million which will be fully borne by the Sarawak government," he explained.

For the record, as many as four companies will be working on this project later.

Meanwhile, during the event, Dato Sri Abdul Karim and his deputy, Datuk Snowdan Lawan had the opportunity to participate in the 'bermukun' ceremony which was the highlight of the night.

Also present were Sarawak Arts Council Chief Executive Officer, Dayang Mariana Abang Bolhassan, Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Permanent Secretary, Datu Sherrina Hussaini and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
