SIBU: Basic first aid knowledge is vital for saving lives during emergencies in sports, said Bukit Assek assemblyman, Chieng Jin Ek.

He stressed that athletes, coaches, and spectators should acquire these skills to respond swiftly and effectively when injuries occur.

Speaking at the World First Aid Day 2024 launch at the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Sibu Branch Headquarters, Chieng noted that the risk of sports-related injuries, ranging from sprained ankles to heart attacks, is a serious concern.

He highlighted the need for young athletes to be educated on the importance of first aid to ensure safety at sporting events.

Chieng also praised the MRC for their ongoing efforts in delivering first aid training and education, which has encouraged a proactive response culture within the community.

He called on the public to consider learning first aid skills to be better prepared for emergencies, not just in sports but in everyday life.

Also in attendance were Sibu MP Oscar Ling, MRC Sibu Honorary Advisor Datuk Lau Ngie Hua, MRC Sibu Branch Chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee, and event organising chairperson Normah Abdul Rahman.-UKASnews
