KUCHING: Sarawak’s renewable energy sector is set for a major boost following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CRE International Co. Limited (CRE International) and InvestSarawak.
The MoU, inked at the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) Sarawak, outlines a collaboration to explore solar and other renewable energy projects with a potential capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).
The signing ceremony, witnessed by Sarawak Deputy Premier and MINTRED Minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, is a significant step in Sarawak’s ambition to become a leading sustainable energy hub. The projects, which include wind and energy storage solutions, represent an estimated investment of USD 1.5 billion (RM6.44 billion).
Datuk Amar Awang Tengah emphasised the importance of such collaborations in accelerating Sarawak’s energy transition.
“This partnership marks a pivotal moment for Sarawak as we move towards becoming a renewable energy leader in the region,” he said.
CRE International, the renewable energy arm of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), specialises in clean energy projects across Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Europe.
General Manager of CRE International, Wang Qi, expressed enthusiasm about working in Sarawak, noting the state’s commitment to sustainability.
“Sarawak’s natural resources and clean energy vision align perfectly with our mission,” he said.
InvestSarawak, Sarawak’s One-Stop Centre for investment facilitation and trade, will guide the project development, further attracting foreign investments to boost Sarawak’s economic growth.
“This MoU highlights Sarawak’s commitment to becoming a top investment destination in the renewable energy sector,” said InvestSarawak CEO Timothy Ong,
The collaboration will focus on identifying project sites, defining commercial frameworks, and working with local authorities to ensure smooth project execution.
The MoU will serve as a foundation for further detailed agreements as Sarawak strives to meet its net-zero carbon targets.
Also present at the event were MINTRED Deputy Minister, Malcom Mussen Lamoh, Sarawak Economic Planning Unit Director, Datu Lester Matthew, and key representatives from CRE International and InvestSarawak. -UKASnews
