KUCHING: The conversion of food waste into valuable resources such as animal feed and fertiliser is a critical step and a ‘game changer’ in the solid waste management industry.
Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, highlighted that Fly Technology Agriculture Sdn Bhd (FTA), a local company, has spearheaded this transformation, particularly by enhancing food security and promoting the circular economy through the NGO ‘Worming Up’.
He explained that this aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and food waste management has become a key part of Sarawak's development agenda as outlined in the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“Instead of building landfills, we turn waste into fertiliser, protein, and oil.
"Rather than letting food waste go to waste, we can convert it into valuable resources, creating a circular economy that generates revenue,” he said.
He was speaking at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Fly Technology Agriculture Sdn Bhd and seven strategic partners at TEGAS Digital Village on Thursday.
The Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government added that this MoU will pave the way for innovation in agriculture, waste management, and environmental conservation to become the norm.
He emphasised the importance of ensuring that the current generation leaves behind a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for future generations.
At the event, Datuk Amar Dr Sim witnessed the MoU signing between FTA and seven strategic partners involved in the collaboration with ‘Worming Up’, including Masranti Plantation Sdn. Bhd., Siang Heng (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., Hilton Kuching Hotel, Bioloop Sdn. Bhd., Formeta PLT, Harbin Venturecy Cultural Development Co. Ltd. (China), and Monster Biotech (Taiwan).
It was noted that 'Worming Up' works with its strategic partners across various sectors, including industrial waste management, the circular economy, food security, sustainable food initiatives, and organic waste management.
Also present were Batu Kitang State Assemblyman, Dato Lo Khere Chiang, FTA Managing Director Jeff Wee, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
