KUCHING: The digital transformation introduced by the Sarawak Government is helping the state to plan strategic and inclusive urban development.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said Sarawak's digital transformation extends to urban development via investments in smart city initiatives.
He explained that Sarawak started investing in smart cities as an initiative to optimise city management and improve the quality of life for residents.
"Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) are being integrated into infrastructure systems to increase efficiency in areas such as traffic management, energy distribution and public services," he said.
He said this in his keynote address at the Sarawak Future Forum held here, on Thursday.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari explained that a smart traffic system has already been implemented in the capital to reduce congestion and lower carbon emissions.
Commenting on the matter, he stated that the system uses real-time data to monitor traffic flow, allowing dynamic adjustments to traffic signals and improving overall traffic efficiency.
"This smart city initiative not only improve the standard of living in the city but it also aligns with Sarawak's goal to create an efficient and sustainable city.
"With this effort, Sarawak can develop by maintaining environmental sustainability while also improving livability in urban areas," he explained.
He added that this digital transformation also enables Sarawak to launch an initiative to manage waste intelligently by optimising the recycling process and waste disposal process which will contribute to a cleaner environment.
