KUCHING: Sarawakians are urged to choose correct and reliable platforms for obtaining current information, especially on social media.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, said information dissemination platforms today are in 'competition' to spread information, with some opting to share false information and negative propaganda for public consumption.

According to him, the situation worsens when certain irresponsible parties misuse Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to falsify someone’s identity.

"That’s why we must realise that this information not only evolves but is now going through a revolution where everyone today is an information generator on social media," he said.

He said this during the Jiwa Komuniti Madani Programme at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) level held at a hotel here on Sunday.

The programme involved three DUNs under the Stampin Parliament, namely DUN Kota Sentosa, DUN Batu Kitang, and DUN Batu Kawa.

Datuk Amar Dr Sim added that accurate and reliable news must have a positive value to avoid creating negative perceptions of Sarawak in general and Malaysia in particular.

“We are not the best yet, but we aim to be the best one day.

"This all depends on how we deliver authentic information that does not cause misunderstandings and ensures that there are no negative elements in the dissemination of information,” he added.

During the event, the Batu Kawa Assemblyman was also honoured to present the Appointment Certificates of the Madani Community Committee members to all three DUNs involved.

Also present were Kota Sentosa Assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, Batu Kitang Assemblyman, Dato Ir Lo Khere Chiang, Sarawak Information Department (JaPen), Director Helmy Hamid, community leaders under the Stampin Parliament, and other guests. -UKASnews
