KUCHING: Sarawak must produce more skilled and innovative workers to meet the demands of high-paying industries, particularly in the emerging new economy sectors, says Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

He emphasised the importance of quality education and skills training for Sarawak’s youth, ensuring they are well-equipped for future opportunities.

“Since assuming this role in 2017, I have seen significant advancements in education and human capital development. We have upgraded school facilities, collaborated with technical institutions, and fostered a keen interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM),” said the Premier in a speech delivered by Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD), Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He was speaking during the Sarawak Career and Training Fair (SCaT Fair) at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre on Saturday.

The Sarawak government has also committed RM15 million to provide free laptops to 5,000 Sarawakian students from low-income families in public and private higher education institutions, aiming to ease their financial burden and improve their learning experience.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari further highlighted the state's efforts to attract private sector investment in education and skills training initiatives, including mentorship programmes.

Under the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, the government is formulating the Sarawak Talent Policy, which targets a 30 per cent skilled workforce by 2030, particularly in the hydrogen and digital sectors.

He expressed hope that SCaT Fair will become a key platform for education and career opportunities, reflecting Sarawak’s dedication to building a workforce capable of thriving in the new economy.

Also present at the event were Deputy Minister for MEITD, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister for Transport, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information, and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
