KUCHING: The Sarawak government is confident that the Sarawak Delta Geo Park will soon receive recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark, further elevating the state's reputation on the world stage.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, stated that various efforts are underway, particularly in meeting the necessary criteria to achieve this prestigious UNESCO Global Geopark status.

He noted that such recognition would promote Sarawak as an environmental tourism destination, in line with Malaysia's national parks.

“We hope that the aspirations of the state government and the people will be realised when we receive this recognition," he said during a special interview on the 'Juh Randau' programme by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) at Baitulmakmur Building on Friday.

Further elaborating on the efforts needed to achieve recognition for the Sarawak Delta Geo Park, Datuk Len highlighted four key factors that must be considered.

“The first is that the area must have a unique geological feature that holds 'universal value.' Secondly, there must be clear visual representation of this unique geology.

“Thirdly, the Sarawak Delta Geo Park must establish connections with other UNESCO Global Geoparks, and lastly, there must be a unique cultural element within the geopark area,” he explained.

In the effort to foster collaboration with other UNESCO Global Geoparks, Datuk Len mentioned that the Sarawak government will host the 'International Seminar Aspiring Sarawak Delta Geopark' from October 7 to 9.

He added that the seminar will involve several countries, including Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and others, as part of an effort to strengthen partnerships, whether through Memoranda of Understanding or agreements with individuals, companies, or communities, to contribute to the development of products for the UNESCO Global Geopark.

“The most important thing is to deepen our understanding to ensure that, once recognised, the Sarawak Delta Geo Park can be sustained, and the recognition is not revoked,” he stressed.

He further mentioned that the seminar will be officially launched by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, with the closing ceremony to be officiated by him. -UKASnews
