Dato Ibrahim Baki Appointed Chairman Of Sarawak Energy

KUCHING: Dato Ibrahim Baki has been appointed as Chairman of Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy), effective October 1, 2024. 

He succeeds Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi who has chaired the company since 2005, guiding its transformation into a leading regional player in renewable energy and sustainability.

Dato Ibrahim, currently the Satok Assemblyman, brings over three decades of experience across industries such as property development, shipping, and media. 

A legal professional by training, he holds an LL. B (Hons) from the United Kingdom and is a Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn. 

He began his career as a Legal Officer at PETRONAS in 1984, before co-founding the law firm Messrs Idris Buang, Ibrahim Baki & Co in Sarawak. 

Dato Ibrahim also serves as a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director of PETRONAS.

Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed leaves behind an enduring legacy. 

Under his leadership, Sarawak Energy expanded from a traditional utility with 2,042 employees and a generation capacity of 849MW in 2005 to over 6,000 employees and a capacity of 5,745MW today. 

During his tenure, the company achieved 99.5 per cent electrification across the state, up from 80 per cent in 2009.

Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed's contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Sarawak State Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004 and 2005, and the BrandLaureate 'Man of the Year' Brand ICON Leadership Award in 2015. 

In 2022, he received the Outstanding Global Muslim Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award at the Global Muslim Business Forum. 

Most recently in 2023, Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed was appointed by Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a member of a special advisory body comprising professionals and economic experts to advise the Prime Minister on his role as Finance Minister. -UKASnews
