BETONG: The strong unity of the community in the Nanga Samu Longhouse, which has never experienced division, should serve as an example for the people of this state, despite the longhouse reaching its 100th year.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, stated that this concept can also be expanded to Sarawak as a whole, promoting harmony.

"The most important thing is to maintain unity and avoid division.

"The community living in this 100-year-old longhouse has never been divided. If this longhouse can do it, Sarawak can also be like this longhouse," he said.

He made these remarks during the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Nanga Samu Longhouse in Ulu Paku on Saturday.

During the event, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also received a unique gift, a Brunei Brass Labu Kendi, which is a valuable heirloom and artefact.

A cake-cutting ceremony was also held, together with the oldest resident of the Nanga Samu Longhouse, Chundi Ngabong, who was born in 1922 and is now 102 years old.

Earlier, the Sarawak Premier greeted around 500 residents in all 24 family units of the oldest longhouse in the Betong region.

The late former Sergeant Penghulu Luta Tangai was the primary founder of the longhouse, which has existed since 13 July 1924, with him building the foundation pillars at door number six. -UKASnews
