KUCHING: The Gawai Bazaar will be held at MJC Batu Kawa for the first time on May 16 to 26 in conjunction with the Sarawak State Level Gawai Dayak Celebration 2024.

According to Deputy Chairman of the Gawai Bazaar 2024 Working Committee, Miro Simuh, there will be 180 stalls selling food and drinks as well as handicrafts.

The Serembu Assemblyman said, the bazaar will provide an opportunity to elevate small businesses.

At the same time, he said a great variety of interesting events and side activities will be held during the 11 days of the bazaar to enliven the atmosphere besides enriching the experience of visitors.

“Many activities will be carried out especially at night whereby stalls will start operating from 2 p.m. to 12 midnight.

“We will also be having a main stage for various cultural and singing performances by local artists.

“Therefore, I call on the public especially the Dayak community who will be celebrating Gayak Dayak on June 1 and 2 to stop by at the Gawai Bazaar 2024 and buy delicacies such as cakes, biscuits, and anything else they need for Gawai before going back to their villages or longhouses,” he said.

Miro said this when met by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) after chairing the Gawai Bazaar 2024 Working Committee meeting at the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) Office here, on Wednesday.

He also explained that the event, now in its fourth edition, will be inaugurated by the Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Chairman of the Gawai Bazaar 2024 Working Committee, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on May 17.

This year, the Bidayuh community will host the state level Gawai celebration.

As such, the Gawai Bazaar 2024 will be held with the symbolic ‘maad kasah’ ceremony, meaning ‘open the mat’ in Bidayuh, which is performed to mark the beginning of the Gawai celebration. -UKASnews
