BINTULU: The electricity supply in Bintulu will be upgraded to 1,500 Megawatts (MW) by 2028.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg stated that the electricity capacity will be increased to 1,000 MW in the first phase through gas turbine cycles.

According to him, generating electricity through gas turbines is more efficient and competitive for driving economic and industrial growth.

"Today I want to announce that the electricity supply will be increased to 1,000 MW through gas turbine cycles.

"So in the first phase, we will increase the electricity supply to 1,000 MW, while the second phase will generate an additional 500 MW by 2028, which means Bintulu will be supplied with 1,500 MW of electricity," he said.

He said this while speaking at a ‘Majlis Ramah Tamah’ organised by the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) here, on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also mentioned that Bintulu will explore new methods of electricity generation through kinetic energy.

"I want to try a new method using waves, which is kinetic energy. Kinetic means the motion of wave mobility.

"I will try it in Samalaju where we already have a jetty that is about 3.5 kilometres long using wave motion," he said.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that if successful, Bintulu will be the first location to use wave power for electricity.

Also present at the event were Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, Sarawak Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department, Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, BDA Deputy Chairman Dato Haidar Khan Asghar Khan, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
