MIRI: Sarawak is set to enjoy significant economic opportunities if the Niah National Park in Miri is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Rosey Yunus said the recognition would undoubtedly boost the tourism sector among local and foreign tourists.

"There will certainly be an impact, especially in the economy sector, as we can expect an influx of tourists not just from overseas but also from within the country since not everyone has been to Gua Niah (Niah Caves).

"So, if it gains this level of fame, it will be a privilege for us to witness this historical heritage site," she said.

She said this when met by reporters at her Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here, on Monday.

Previously, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh also mentioned that the Niah National Park is currently undergoing the final selection phase.

He said that the final selection would take place in New Delhi, India, this July. -UKASnews
