KUCHING: Satok Assemblyman, Dato Ibrahim Baki on Tuesday officiated handing over of house keys ceremony to the victims of the house collapse in Kampung Kudei Lama Tengah.
The new house now serves as a home for a family of ten for Malik Abu Bakar.
According to Dato Ibrahim, the cost of building the 850 square foot house, which has four bedrooms, was RM95,000.
“The old house was no longer habitable after it subsided.
“We are looking for ways to support him, his wife, his brother, their five children, and an elderly woman, all of whom are part of the B40 group.
“We are grateful to a good samaritan, Datuk Chew Chiaw Han, from Ibraco, who was involved in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme in Sarawak.
"Each year, they build houses, and thankfully, there was a slot available this year,” he said.
He said this when being met by reporters at Kampung Kudei Lama Tengah on Tuesday morning.
A tragic incident occurred on May 1, 2024 whereby Malik’s house subsided.
It took three months to complete their newly built home, with construction beginning in June 2024.
Dato Ibrahim also mentioned that Malik Abu Bakar’s previous house was situated quite low, but the newly constructed home has been elevated with higher floors to keep the family safe during floods.
The homeowner, Malik Abu Bakar spoke to the media about the tragedy and explained that it began due to heavy rain.
The old house, made of wood and stone, began to collapse slowly, starting from the kitchen.
His brother and father were almost trapped, but thankfully, everyone managed to escape safely. -UKASnews
