MIRI: Antique items worth hundreds of thousands were destroyed in a fire involving the residence of Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala in Kampung Pa' Umor, Bario, last Sunday.

Datuk Gerawat, who is also the Mulu Assemblyman, revealed that an investigation into the cause of the fire is still being conducted by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

Commenting on the incident, he informed that he was not at the location when it happened and only arrived on Sunday afternoon to assist the investigation team in gathering information.

"According to the JBPM investigation, they revealed that the fire is most likely caused by electrical issues," he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the Hari Raya Aidilfitri event organised by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Melayu Miri here, on Monday night.

Datuk Gerawat further clarified that the greatest loss due to the fire was the memories with his parents including the older generations who helped build the house about 30 years ago. -UKASnews
