First Batch Of Graduates From Sarawak’s Inaugural Semiconductor Programme

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Fourteen trainees have successfully completed the first-ever Semiconductor Mastery Programme in Sarawak, specialising in Analog Integrated Circuit (IC) Design and IC Test Solution Development Engineering.

The programme marks a significant milestone in the state's push to advance its semiconductor industry.

Sarawak’s Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, praised the initiative, stating that all graduates will be employed by either SMD Semiconductor or Melexis.

He highlighted SMD Semiconductor’s goal to produce 500 semiconductor professionals by 2030.

Dato Sri Roland encouraged other government-linked companies to follow SMD’s example in fostering local talent.

Furthermore, he also emphasised the importance of STEM education in equipping future professionals with the necessary high-tech skills.

During the completion ceremony at SMD Academy, the CEO of SMD, Shariman Jamil, announced that 16 new trainees have been selected for the second cohort, set to begin on September 3, 2024.

He noted the need for stronger STEM education to meet the demands of the semiconductor industry and revealed a partnership with Swinburne University to enhance training opportunities.

The programme, which started on February 14, 2024 was sponsored by the Ministry and involved collaboration between SMD, Melexis, and CENTEXS. -UKASnews
