KUCHING: The Sarawak government plans to develop another new port in Tanjung Embang to serve the Kuching port industry.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said that the dependence from the Kuching area on Senari Port has made the port congested.

Therefore, a new port is proposed to be built in Tanjung Embang, which will be located at the sea - similar to what has been done in Japan.

"As we all know, Senari Port is small, so we will create a new port in Tanjung Embang.

"The port will not be built on the cape area but instead it will be built at the sea.

"We will implement land reclamation to build the port," he explained.

He said this during the Hari Raya Open House event of the Gedong District at a hotel here, on Sunday.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari, who is also Gedong Assemblyman, said that the decision to build the port at sea is to avoid beach dredging activities in the area.

"We don't have to dredge the beach because the depth at sea is sufficient to build the port.

"When the port is ready, it will be connected to the shore and then to Kota Samarahan and Gedong," he added.

He believes that if advanced countries like Japan and China can do it, it is not impossible to use the same method to build a seaport on Sarawak’s coastline.

Also present were Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dato Idris Buang, Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Regional Affairs Datuk Rubiah Wang, Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Advisor to the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment  Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais, Member of Parliament for Batang Sadong Rodiyah Sapiee, Simunjan Assemblyman Awla Dris, and other honourable guests. -UKASnews
