KUCHING: Sarawak eRacing team clinched a silver medal on the third day of the eSports event at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA XXI) held at Swinburne Sarawak on Thursday.

According to a news report by the New Sarawak Tribune, the team, comprising Muhammad Hamdany Abdul Hamid, 21, and Jeff Qi Rui Tan, 14, won the state’s first ever silver medal in the eSports competition.

Abdul Yazid Imran Abdul Razak and Muhammad Hasif Zainal Abidin from Perak claimed the gold medal, while Aisy Amani Zikry Azmi and Muhammad Hakim Suhaimi from Melaka took home the bronze medal.

The gruelling 45-lap Double Team Race, which spanned 1 hour and 30 minutes, took place at the Sepang Grand Prix.

Muhammad Hamdany led for 12 laps after overtaking Perak, but when he entered the pit lane for a driver swap, Perak's quick change enabled them to reclaim the lead from Jeff.

With just 22 minutes remaining, Sarawak made a bold move by staying out on the track, seizing pole position to create a gap with Perak after the leading team headed into the pits for their driver swap.

In the end, Sarawak made a pit stop for a driver change on Lap 34, handing the lead to Perak and, despite holding onto second place, failed to close the 14-second gap.

The medal presentation for all eSports events will take place on August 24.
