SIBU: Kampung Datu in Sibu will be redeveloped naturally and become the largest traditional village in Sarawak.

According to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, the village will be restored but at the same time, there needs to be development.

He said, in addition to modernising the village, the cultural characteristics of Kampung Datu and its surroundings will continue to be preserved.

"These characteristics reflect the heritage culture that we hold in Kampung Datu.

"It means we have a boulevard, from the An-nur Mosque straight to the river bank, and built modern villages and houses. If Darul Hana can be built, I'm sure Kampung Datu can also be built," he said.

He said this while speaking at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House of Sibu Division, at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) Sibu on Saturday.

In the meantime, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also stated that the banks of the Igan river will be restored and have interesting features.

"We will make a bank that has interesting characteristics, besides that the Convention Center will also be developed on the bank of the river.

"This will provide a path for us to modernise the existing infrastructure in Sibu's original village, and we will connect this village to Kemuyang with a new 15km long road.

"It means from Kemuyang go to Teku then UTS and continue to Kampung Datu. Meaning that Kampung Datu is expanded to Kemuyang", he added.

Among the goals of the establishment of the village is to create unity, understanding, respect and strengthen friendly relations between the original residents of Kampung Datu.

At the same time, it becomes a liaison representative or mediator between residents and government, private and developer institutions regarding residents' problems.
