MUKAH: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) Laila Taib Campus in Mukah has now emerged as the only campus in Malaysia equipped with advanced facilities in marine engineering, including ship management simulation technology.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the UTS Laila Taib Campus has been proposed to collaborate with educational institutions in Turkey which have already implemented advanced technologies in the maritime industry.
The proposal includes the introduction of joint programmes with universities in Turkey which will provide opportunities for students to pursue postgraduate studies in the country.
He emphasised that international collaboration is crucial for enhancing the quality of education and technological advancements at UTS.
"The implementation of technological changes in the maritime industry is expected to position UTS as a leader in marine technology in Malaysia while also advancing the education sector in Mukah and strengthening international cooperation in advanced technologies,” he said.
He said this in a press conference following his visit to the UTS Laila Taib Campus, here, on Tuesday.
The Sarawak Premier also revealed plans to expand the use of chip technology, particularly chip components that are essential in remote sensing technology.
He noted that discussions will be held with the local semiconductor sector to train students in related programmes.
“These programmes aim to provide students with basic marine engineering skills, offering opportunities for them to further their studies in underwater data management.
“To understand the potential for underwater oil resources, we need to comprehend the geology of the area.
“This geological data can be obtained through exploration via unmanned equipment or underwater unmanned vehicles," he explained.
