SIBU: Sarawak Minister for Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) , led a delegation from the Sarawak Women and Family Council to visit the temporary transit centre for the homeless (TTG)  in Sibu on Friday.

According to Dato Sri Fatimah, since its establishment in 2021, TTG Sibu has assisted 180 homeless individuals, with only 22 still residing there.

She noted that some of these individuals come from areas outside Sibu, such as Mukah and Kanowit, emphasising the need to provide them with shelter.

"During our efforts to assist the homeless, we found that some of them come from outside Sibu, such as Mukah, Kanowit, and other areas, so we need to provide them with a place.

"I want them to see the government's initiatives in helping the less fortunate, the needy, and the homeless," she said when met by reporters during the visit, which coincided with the State-Level Women’s Day 2024 celebration.

Furthermore, with the success of TTG in Sibu, similar centres will be established in Miri, Kuching, and Bintulu.

TTG Kuching is expected to start operations on August 31, with an ongoing search for a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to manage the facility.

TTG Miri is projected to be completed by December 27 this year, with TTG Bintulu following next year.

Dato Sri Fatimah also mentioned her ministry's collaboration with a special committee under the Home Ministry to address documentation issues faced by the homeless.

Also present during the visit were the Deputy Minister for KPWK, Datuk Rosey Yunus, and the Resident of Sibu Division, Abang Mohammad Porkan Abang Budiman. -UKASnews
