KUCHING: The Sarawak government aims to have 10,000 technologists registered with the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) by 2025.

Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said, registering with MBOT will help in enhancing professionalism and boost industry productivity through capacity and talent development.

As of June this year, 6,555 professional technologists have registered with MBOT, he said.

"Our ministry, with the aid of the Association of Professional Technicians and Technologists (APTT) will work together with other agencies to make this happen," he said.

He said this during the Advanced Sustainable Technology Conference (ASTECH) 2024 held here, on Tuesday.

According to Dato Sri Roland Sagah, ASTECH 2024 serves as a platform to produce highly skilled individuals.

This initiative directly propels Sarawak’s socioeconomic landscape to greater heights in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, he added.

“Organising the ASTECH 2024 is highly appropriate, as it aligns with the recommendation of Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg to produce a highly skilled workforce, especially in engineering, technology, science, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET),” he said.

Additionally, Dato Sri Roland Sagah urged skilled professionals such as technologists in Sarawak to register with MBOT to obtain professional accreditation, aligning with the state’s goal of having a recognised high-skilled workforce.

ASTECH 2024 is an international conference bringing together scholars, industry players, and students involved in education, technology, and the latest innovations, featuring 170 presentations from seven countries.

Besides the host country, other participating countries include Indonesia, Australia, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Portugal.

The international conference, which gathers 600 students from various educational institutions around Kuching, is jointly organised by Politeknik Kuching Sarawak and Politeknik Negeri Bandung.

Also present were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Adana Jed, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
