BETONG: Emphasising English language proficiency at the school level is crucial for fostering student success.

Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu stated that mastery of the English language is also vital for students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

“This is in line with the Sarawak government's approach, which is exploring various new economies such as the hydrogen economy and carbon storage. It is the children of this generation who will drive these initiatives.”

He made these remarks while officiating the 2024 SK Nanga Ajau, Betong Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) Dinner at SK Nanga Ajau’s Dining Hall in Betong recently.

He mentioned that the youth in Betong would also have opportunities for higher education when Sarawak begins offering free education at state-owned universities in 2026.

He also congratulated the headmaster and the school community for the outstanding achievement of four students, two of whom continued their studies at MRSM Betong and two at the Sarawak Foundation International School.

“This shows that our rural schools also have great potential to succeed, on par with other schools, whether in urban or rural areas,” he said.

As a token of support, the Layar assemblyman approved an allocation of RM20,000 for robotics activities at SK Nanga Ajau, Betong.

Earlier, Betong Member of Parliament Dr. Richard Rapu urged parents and students in his area to prioritise education.

He stressed that education is not just a ticket to getting a job but is crucial in shaping successful individuals in life, regardless of the field they choose.

He also announced a donation of RM5,000 to the SK Nanga Ajau PIBG to partly finance their activities.-UKASnews
