KUCHING: The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) acts as a frontline agency in the efforts to protect and manage the environment in Sarawak.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, stated that since its establishment on February 1, 1994, the NREB has demonstrated impressive performance, reflecting Sarawak’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development in the region.

He explained that this commitment is clearly evidenced by various achievements at both the state and international levels, showing that their efforts are recognised by others outside the region.

“One of the NREB’s achievements is the successful implementation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) system, which has ensured that development projects are carried out responsibly, with proper consideration given to their environmental impacts.

“This has not only protected our natural ecosystems but also fostered a culture of sustainability within our business and industrial sectors,” he said.

He said this during his speech at the 30th anniversary dinner of the NREB held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that the success of the NREB in ensuring Sarawak’s environment is consistently well-preserved is clearly demonstrated by the region’s ability to maintain good environmental quality and avoid major environmental disasters, despite facing various challenges and rapid development.

“The Sarawak government is always committed to achieving a balance between development needs and the protection of natural resources, the environment, and the welfare of our people.

“It is important that our economic growth does not come at the expense of our environment to ensure its sustainability,” he further explained.

At the same event, the Sarawak Premier had the honour of presenting the BAKTI Medal Awards to 13 NREB staff members who have shown outstanding performance, as well as certificates of appreciation to three recipients, including former Controllers and Deputy Controllers of the NREB.

In addition, the NREB made history by receiving recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for establishing the largest network of school environment clubs in Malaysia.

Also in attendance were the Sarawak Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak State Attorney General, Datu Saferi Ali, State Financial Secretary, Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister for Transport (Air and Road), Datuk Dr Jerip Susil and Controller of Environmental Quality for Sarawak, Jack Liam. -UKASnews
